William Yu is a writer, strategist, and activist. In 2016, he launched #StarringJohnCho, a Shorty Award-winning project that used photoshopped movie posters to call for greater Asian American representation in media. Director Jon M. Chu recently stated, "One of the first things that made me want to make a movie like [Crazy Rich Asians] was the #StarringJohnCho movement."
In 2018, Yu's follow up work #SeeAsAmStar used artificial intelligence to overlay Asian American stars into video clips of hit films. His original screenplay, LOVE YOU, CHARLIE, won the screenplay competition at the 41st New York Asian American International Film Festival. As a senior strategist at advertising agency Giant Spoon, William finds new ways for entertainment brands to spark cultural conversations.
William has received national attention for his works with major media outlets including The New York Times, CNN, BBC, BuzzFeed, The Hollywood Reporter, Vanity Fair, NBC News, Vulture, Business Insider and more.
